Writer’s Block is a completely mental obstacle that wipes out all creativity and leaves you staring at a blank page on your computer screen for hours; you don’t even remember where the space bar is.

A fried brain, on the other hand, allows your mind to continue producing thoughts and ideas, even good ones at that. However, the words that come out are often complete gibberish and you can’t quite get your message across. I like to relate it to those dreams where you want to scream but you have no voice…that is a fried brain.

Up until recently, I thought any road bump in my writing was just good ol’ Writer’s Block. I even have several preemptive measures I like to take to ensure I’m not encroaching on a deadline when the deadly, yet totally psychological, disorder hits. But now I’m starting to notice that when I produce pages of gibberish or my ideas don’t sound as good out loud as they do in my head, it feels quite differently from Writer’s Block. What is this debilitating and humiliating problem? It’s a fried brain.

Fried brains are a result of hard work and constant production. I’ll be on a roll and there’s no stopping me – until I stop actually making sense. Unlike Writer’s Block, which is just a state of mind, a fried brain is actually your brain telling you it’s time for a break. It’s only natural that your brain wants to relax, reset, and rejuvenate. So what should you during these confusing times? Here are a few ideas:

1. Just walk away. This might mean an entire afternoon of not working, but it’s better than turning in Pig Latin to your clients.
2. Do something that makes you happy. If you enjoy painting your toenails, do that. If you like staring out your window, by all means, do that. Do something you enjoy is a surefire way to let your brain refuel.
3. Get fresh air. This seems to my biggest lifesaver. When you’re on a copywriting roll, it’s hard to forget that you’re cooped up inside for hours at a time. Airing yourself out is refreshing and reminds you of all the things that inspire you.
4. Nap. Wait, what?! Yes, I’m telling you to go take a nap. There has been more than one occasion where I was stuck on a press release, or even a headline, and I kept cranking away at it, trying to find the best approach. When I realized I wasn’t getting anywhere, a quick nap helped put things into perspective and I woke up ready to take another crack at it.
5. Grab a bite. Give your mind something else to chew on, literally. Not only is a little sustenance a nice way to take a break but you’ll have energy to get back to you work and finish it like a champion.

Those five steps have done wonders for me every time a fried brain has threatened my deadlines. However, this is truly a process that differs for every Copywriter, one of trial and error. If you do start experiencing “Fried Brainitis,” it’s only a symbol of your hard work and determination, and therefore, getting back on track is really just about giving your mind a well-deserved break.
