What are Trackback Links
Trackback links are automatically generated links that occur when you reference another WordPress blog from your WordPress blog by linking to it. The webmaster of the blog you link to will be notified that you have linked to them via a ‘ping’ in their comments section of their blog.
Many webmasters have their comments set to require manually approval, so it is also important that you notify the webmaster that you have linked to them and tell them why you did so.
The easiest way of notifying the webmaster is to add a comment on the page that you have linked to. Like all blog comments, make it high quality and add to the discussion with wise, incisive comment rather than some bland comment like “Your blog is cool!”.
How Do Trackback Pings Work?
When someone links to a blog post on your blog (assuming you are both using WordPress – the worlds most used blogging platform), you will receive a ‘pingback’ in your comments list.
You should keep an eye on your comments on a regular basis for this reason.
To see your trackback links, click on the ‘comments’ tab, then at the top of the list, filter by ‘pings’ and you will see a list of the trackback links that people have created.
A trackback link looks like this;

It is always worth checking that the link actually exists and is on a site that you are happy to link to before you click ‘approve’.
Ideally you want to have links from closely related blogs, so the closer their content is to yours, the better.
How to Use trackbacks Effectively
In order to gain some valuable links on authortiy blogs in your niche, all you need to do is to find those blogs in the first place. Seach on Google for high traffic keywords in your niche and work your way down the rankings, looking for blogs.
To check if it’s a wordpress blog, right click on the blog page and select ‘view page source’. This will show you the source code behind the site.
Once you know that it is a WordPress blog, look to see if it have comments at the bottom of it’s posts. If the blog allows commenting then it is a great post for you to link to from your blog.
Many bloggers don’t know what trackback links are, and so often delete them along with any spam comments that they receive, this is why you should notify them that you have linked to them.
There are two extra advantages to this, firstly you will get a new blogger to visit your blog and take a look and secondly, you will dramatically increase the chances that your trackback will be approved.
Every blogger likes to be referenced rather than just being linked to, so if you can ‘recommend’ the resource to your readers then the you will appear to be giving rather than taking.
Blogging is all about ‘community’ and building relationships with your fellow bloggers is an important part of the blogging process.
